About La Serpiente Emplumada
The Feathered Serpent, Quetzalcoatl
Legend tells that there was one day when Quetzalcoatl, enraged by seeing how humans worshiped other gods with temples and sacrifices, decided to descend to the underworld and became a human himself in order to teach the people his knowledge.
Quetzalcoatl, by stopping one of the sacrifices, provoked the fury of his brother Tezcatlipoca (Huitzilopochtli) and the latter decided to get revenge using a trap against his brother. Tezcatlipoca handed his brother a liquid as a “gift”.
Quetzalcoatl drank the liquid and got drunk. Without knowing what he was doing, he slept with one of the women of the temple. The next morning feeling guilty for what he had done, he decided to build a boat with snakes and leave the town. He sank forever and was reborn as the Morning Star. He later adopted the name of Quetzalcoatl, which means The Feathered Serpent.
